I am and will, hopefully, always be a morning person. I love waking up and getting shit done. Because I’ve been pretty into my morning routine and reading other people’s, I’m gonna share mine with you.
|| Monday, Tuesday, Thursday ||
Yes, I have a different routine on certain days of the week and it’s purely because my classes start at different times so I can get more stuff done. On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays my classes don’t start until after 1 so I have more time before I need to leave the apartment to get to school.
7:00 am – Alarm Goes Off
This is the one constant thing in my schedule. I’m up at 7 am every day because, honestly, I can never sleep beyond this. I’ve tried to set alarms for 7: 20 or 7:30 and every single time I’ve woken up before my alarm at 7 on the dot.
Surprisingly I don’t check my phone for updates or to read the NYT Morning Briefing anymore so I’m rather proud of myself. Instead I meditate for 5 minutes, which is a surprisingly excellent way to start the morning, using the Simple Habit Meditation app (download it for Android or iPhone). The Simple Habit Meditation app is excellent because there are a ton of free guided meditations and there are a lot of different instructors to guide you. There’s also a subscription service that’s $10.99 per month or $95.99 for a year ($7.99 per month).
I personally prefer the Headspace app (download for Android or iPhone) but it has significantly fewer free guided meditations. The subscription is slightly more expensive at $12.99 per month, but the same for the yearly plan at $95.99 ($7.99 per month). They have a pretty amazing student subscription plan that’s only $9.99 for an entire year! I recently discovered this and will definitely be purchasing this plan very soon.
Regardless of which app I use to meditate, after those 5 minutes, I change it to my gym clothes and head to the gym.
8:30 am – Finish My Workout and Get Ready
Because I only workout 3 days a week, I make sure to have an hour-long power session to get the most out of my time.
After my workout, I shower, brush teeth, floss (also a new addition to my routine), and get dressed. Then I make breakfast which is usually hot chocolate and toast or a bowl of Raisin Bran.
9:15 am – Breakfast and Briefing
I love politics. If I wasn’t 100% sure that I’m going into medicine, I would probably end up doing something in politics. So to make sure I’m on top of the news, I read the NYT Morning Briefing and follow up on those stories through other news outlets.
I honestly highly recommend getting the Morning Briefing delivered to your inbox every morning so you can at least scroll through the headlines to have an idea of what’s going on. In the age of information overload and fake news, it’s incredibly important to get your news from reliable sources.
10:00 am – Study
My classes either start at 1 or 2 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays so my schedule allows for a lot of study time. It’s amazing to have so much time to devote to getting work done. It allows me to relax a little at night and spend time with my friends because I know I’ll have time in the morning to get work done.
I typically use this time to get caught up on Immunology notes or to do a last-minute review of any quizzes or exams that I have that day. While I’m not an advocate for cramming, spending forty minutes in the morning to go over everything helps me calm down. It’s a way of telling myself that I already know the content and that I’m as prepared as I can be, more studying isn’t going to make me feel any better.
Of course, this study time is filled with little dance breaks so that I stay motivated. And I typically call my parents so that I can catch up with them. And if there’s any adulting type things I need to do – pay bills, make appointment, etc. – I do them early while I still remember them
By 12:15, I’m usually out the door and headed to class.
|| Wednesday, Friday||
My classes start at 10:10 on Wednesdays and Fridays, so my morning routine looks a little bit different.
7:00 am – Alarm Goes Off
Like I said, this is the one constant I have in my life.
I still meditate for 5 minutes but then I follow it up with some stretching to ease the aching muscles from my workout the day before. Some days I do a quick 15 minute yoga session from the amazing YouTube channel: Yoga with Adrienne. If you’re looking for a good place to start, I highly recommend this Wake Up Yoga routine or this Yoga for Neck and Shoulder Relief routine.
Then I get straight to brushing teeth and getting ready for the day.
8:00 am – Breakfast and Briefing
Food time is undoubtedly the best time. So I give myself thirty minutes to eat and catch up on politics and other interesting news things. My favorite app for this – because there’s an app for everything – is Flipboard (download it for Android or iPhone). It’s an app that aggregates articles from a variety of news sources and you can choose the category of articles that you see. It’s all around one of my favorite ways to have access to lots of interesting reads.
8:30 am – Study
Yup, once again I get a little bit of study time in. Every minute really does count when you’ve got an exam or when you’re trying to get ahead. Usually this is the time that I’m writing out my results and discussions for my lab class.
If I’m not in the mood to study, which happens more often than I’d like to admit, I read a book or blogs about finance or blogging. And I’ll scroll through Pinterest or Instagram depending on the day.
By 9:30, I’m headed out the door on my way to campus.
Written down it doesn’t seem like a much and if I wanted to I could cram more things into the morning. But I won’t. I like my mornings kind of slow. I like being able to sit around and chat with my roommate and not have to stress about the day. Regardless, I hope my morning routine might inspire you to start your morning off well.
